ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE (HITCHIN)The Hitchin Natural Therapy Centre, 3-4 High Street, Hitchin, Herts, SG5 1BHThe Alexander Technique aims to re-educate and supply means of working on oneself in order to change habitual patterns of use. Use of the self determines how one goes about it in his many activities throughout the day from sweeping the floor to sitting in front of the computer to handling stressful situations. Common sense suggests one doesn“t want to damage oneself while doing all those things and yet unawareness of habits of use in response to stimulus cause much suffering and a sense of lack of control. By undue tension in the muscles, uneven distribution of energy and bad co-ordination - poor posture and pressure on the inner organs is created, which in time is likely to cause wear and tear injuries such as RSI, back, neck and shoulder pain, etc. as well as poor functioning of the circulatory systems (breathing, blood circulation and digestion). These effects are often attributed to old age or heredity while overlooking the choice one can exercise over ones own use. The AT is also used as a preventative measure for those who wish to develop a skill without incurring damage to themselves in the process. AT has been recognised widely in the performance world and many schools of theatre, music and dance have AT teachers on their staff. Anyone can benefit - athletes, pregnant women, children, a person rehabilitating after an operation or injury and one coping with stress, pain, chronic illness or disability. I am a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT). Costs: £30.00 per lesson. Contact: Micky Hargil
