CHILTERN SOCIETYThe White Hill Centre, White Hill, Chesham, Buckinghamshire, HP5 1AGThe aims of the Society are to sustain the beauty and character of the Chiltern Hills as well as to conserve and enhance the rich heritage of the area. This is achieved with the financial support of 7500 members and the help of many who take part in activites organised by the Groups within the Society. The Society is affiliated to the Chiltern Woodlands Project Ltd and Chiltern Open Air Museum (both began under the auspices of this Society). * Planning Group: most essential activity. Field officers check planning applications considered detrimental to the environment and submit evidence at Appeals. * Rights of Way Group: monitors footpaths and bridleways and takes up problems with local authorities and landowners. In addition to waymarking, clearance and stile repairs. * Bottom Wood Group deals with the management of trees and woodland in the Society´s wood near Stokenchurch. * Historic Works and Buildings Group: ensures the protection of old buildings and monuments including Lacey Green Windmill. * Chiltern Conservation Volunteers: arrange working parties for local conservation projects and also help and advise societies and schools. * Rivers and Waterlands Conservation Group: preserves rivers, streams, ponds and canals. The Society also appoints Advisors to study local ecological issues.
